The 'People of Their Time' campaign, an annual event initiated by the 'Timpul/Time' contemporary culture magazine and organized by the 'Timpul' Magazine Association in partnership with administrative, cultural, academic and economic institutions, rolled out in Bucharest.
Opening press conference 'People of Their Time' campaign hosted by the National Theater of Bucharest on August 7 2015
"Whereas last year the gala was an event of local span, this year it expanded to regional scale and we hope that it advances to national scale next year, and that the centennial anniversary of the Great Union [in 2018] finds us all united," Professor Daniel Sandru, PhD, director of the 'Timpul' magazine, who also chairs the national jury that will assess the submissions for People of Their Time," told a press conference at the campaign launching event held at the Foyer of the Grand Hall of the National Theater of Bucharest.
Professor Alexandru-Vlad Ciurea, PhD, who sits on the national jury, opined that the event will join the Romanians around their true values who will emerge during the campaign stages.
"We want to promote novelty. 'Timpul' addresses not just the present, but particularly the future," said Professor Ciurea.
Associate Professor George Bondor, 'Timpul' editor in chief, reviewed the terms for the selection of the awardees, mentioning that they'll be known only at the last moment, and that the 'People of Their Time' campaign seeks to contribute to developing the public sphere through transparency and objectivity.
"It's an active campaign aimed at rewarding excellence. (...) What we aim is the reunification of the markets of ideas and public products in this region," said Bondor, noting that the initiative seeks to bring together "experts and public intellectuals."
Journalist Liviu Mihaiu, who is also a member of the jury, said that this is a "meritocracy" campaign, a broad-span grassroots competition of well-deserving people.
"Bad examples change the direction of a society. The 'People of Their Time' campaign comes as an antidote to what happens today in society," Mihaiu said.
'People of Their Time' is an annual event awarding local personalities. Now in its second year, the project expanded from the year before to Romania's North-East Development Region and to the cities of Chisinau (Republic of Moldova) and Cernauti (Ukraine). A media campaign to bring the subject to the public's attention was launched in each of these cities; the public in the six counties of the North-East Region, and in Chisinau and Cernauti, will be able to make nominations on the platform www.oameniitimpului.ro from among the local personalities, for each of the 10 award categories.
The local nominees in each of the seven participating cities will be announced at a local gala, and the end winners will be selected from this pool of contenders. The finalists will be awarded at the 'People of Their Time' Gala that will take place on December 12 at the 'Vasile Alecsandri' National Theater of Iasi.
The nomination categories are as follows: Literature, Arts, Education and Research, Civil Society, Public diplomacy, Memory and History, Journalism, Young values, Health, and Entrepreneurship.
The selection criteria will take in consideration the nominee's reputation in the respective field, but the focus will be on the work that brought him/her to public attention between October 2014 — September 2015, and this is also what the promotion campaign will build on. AGERPRES
